Punks go Oy! in the night
Remember when punk rock mattered? Local group Under the Black Sails does and they'd like you to do the same if their current cycle of songs is any indication. Their six track demo is filled with the sort of anger fueled lyrics, power chord progressions and speed trial drumming that would make an otherwise reasonable man say "Oy!". Fans of early punk groups like Black Flag or the Damned can rejoice that someone is still staying true to the roots of the sound and disregarding all of the whine that has accompanied the punk-pop/emo movement (damn you Tom Delonge)... The first track, "Atomic", sounds sludgy and fast enough to have come from an early eighties SST compilation. The song establishes the band as neo- traditionalists regardless of whether they are in fact familiar with the term. "Number Eight" take more of a hardcore approach, laced with unintelligibly fast singing and palm muted verse sections. In line with their old school punk ethos, the band never lets songs go longer than 3 minutes or have much in the way of guitar solos. The third track, "Roller Coaster", is more of the same Oy!-ness complimented by tandem back up vocals yelled on the chorus. Other highlights of the demo include "Six Pack Love Song", the most tuneful and melodic of the bunch that borders on punk balladry. Also included is the mandatory politically minded/humanistic gravitas on "Survive" and Gloria Gaynor its not ("I'm already under the ground!"). "The Episode" flexes the most muscle of all the selections, shelling the listener with a blast of punk fury and "Fuck You" choruses in just over two minutes. If your heart still burns for classic punk unfettered by pretention or cross-over appeal, check these guys out.
