Gas Tax Holiday 2008/05/06 23:42
What would you do with that 18¢ per gallon tax break? *

* Assuming that almost every economist is wrong and you actually save $20 - $30 over the course of the summer and your income doesn't depend on street or road maintenance that is paid for, either wholly or partially, by the federal gas tax.

It's kinda a lame idea don't you think. All the oil companies have to do is raise prices during the gas tax holiday to make up for the 18 cents.

I saw somewhere that gas has been going up about 1 cent/gallon/day for the past few weeks.

All i gotta say is, I'm glad I don't have to commute into the city anymore. Since I quit my job up there I'm saving about $200 a month just on gas savings alone.

This is a bad idea. Why? Because the states and the Fed are not going to lower spending or reduce budgets based on the holiday. Which means you will be paying for that holiday sooner or later.

You could also spend your economic stimulus check on coffee - granted it's potentially less than 100 venti cups of whtie chocolate mochachino at Starbucks.

I personally think gas is too inexpensive. I would support gas going up to $10 a gallon. It is an old and outdated technology. With all the technology we have in this century if we as a race are still relying on gas for more then another 10-20 years, well then I feel we fail as a species.

Carpool programs, carpool lanes, more busses, people walking, bike lanes, etc. There are so many alternatives in this country already that prices shouldn't effect so many people they way they do. I've lived in different metros and unfortunatly KC is the only metro that I feel like I need a car. But when living in the Twin Cities, I didn't even own a car at the time. I biked, bussed, cabbed, around town. It kept me in better shape, saved me money, kept me from driving drunk, and I met some cool random people along the way. I grew up in the bay area of CA. I dreamed of showing up to high school on a skateboard, not some tricked out import my parents bought me for my sweet 16.

So I support them raising, hell doubling the gas prices over the summer. It is really not that hard to make a few changes in life. All you have to do is take the first step. Each step there after is really rather easy.
