Voter IDs in Missouri 2008/05/13 05:28
Due to the recent US Supreme Court decision regarding potential voters needing valid ID in order to vote, Missouri is about to enact stricter requirements for voting. Some examples of people who would not be able to vote in Missouri (I'm doing this from memory from a Jobs With Justice email that I apparently deleted):

An elderly woman who was born in Mississippi, because Mississippi doesn't have a copy of her birth certificate. (Missouri currently requires a certified copy of a birth certificate and certified copies of any name changes, such as a marriage license(s), divorce decrees, adoption papers, etc.)

A woman with cerebral palsy whose signature differs quite a bit from one time to the next.

And the really ironic one - in 2006, when this went before the state Supreme Court, an elderly judge discovered that he would not be allowed to vote because he didn't renew his driver's license.

Missouri's proposed voter ID law requires that the proof of identity be valid. Expired or suspended licenses would prevent a person from voting. Some organizations have estimated that the proposed law could disenfranchise over 200,000 Missouri citizens.

I don't see what the big deal is. If someone isn't going to take the time to renew thier license, well then if they are driving they are already breaking the law. Now why should someone who fails at maintaining our laws be given the same value in voting as someone like myself who paid my taxes on time, took care of my personal property tax, renews my license, tags, insurance, etc.

As I have been getting older and having to do these little things here and there you have to do in the adult world, first I think to myself that "the man" was just my adolescent laziness, and the only thing that brings me down is my lack of playing by the rules. Play by the rules or don't. But people shouldn't be given the same credit if they don't follow through with VERY simple processes.

They made a comment on the news last night about it, and how it will keep poorer people from voting. Well the last thing this country needs is all the broke people voting for candidates that will give them handouts. What motivation will they ever gain to better themselves, by relying on everyone else around them to make special exceptions for them. I am getting a 2nd job because I get bored with my free time. Which will inturn probably just enable someone to sit on thier couch all day, unemployed, collecting from social programs, saying to themselves that the man is just getting them down.

Enabling 101.
